This took some trial and error because at first I just created the bootable USB using the SpinRite program and tried disabling the UEIF on my mother board. Once connected I needed to create bootable USB drive. I had to remove the hard drives from the Synology and connect them to a motherboard using a SATA cable. So I documented my steps so I remember and hopefully it will help others as well.įirst off I couldn’t just run SpinRite on my Synology.

The documentation on the website is dated so it took me a while to figure out how to get the software to run. I bought and download the application and then was bit stumped on what to do next. It was created by Steve Gibson, one of the hosts and they talk about it’s virtues often on the podcast. I heard about SpinRite from the Security Now podcast. To help me narrow down the problem I thought I’d run SpinRite which is a hard drive diagnostic tool. After doing some detective work I’m not sure if the problem is with the hard drives or the Synology it’s self. By acting up I mean I can’t connect to it and it requires a unplugged reboot to fix it. I will definitely try the programs suggested in the future.I have a Synology NAS that has starting acting up. Ontrack has saved my butt a few times, as has spinrite, but today I'm disappointed.
The drive in question is only 60gigs, and only 50 of that was the partition scanned! So, I dunno. The most interesting thing was that it found 50+gigs of MP3s, 20gigs of JPEGs, 4 or 5gigs of MPGs, and a gig or so of MOVs. Format recovery only yielded a few files, raw recovery produced thousands of never existed files with no names. I tried format recovery and raw recovery in ontrack. Among the corrupt files were a few 400+MB jpgs that never existed. Maybe I shouldn't have done that? I was able to get a few files withontrack easy recovery after that, but most were corrupt. What level 5 does is recover the data like in level 2, but also read and rewrite everything back to the harddrive, TWICE. Most of those were in the 37% zone, but it was steadily increasing as it scanned the rest of the drive.Īfter I ran spinrite level 2, I tried number 5 and let it go, that took an hour or so, I believe. I let spinrite go another 24 hours and it actually finished! Total number of ECC errors was 3-1/4 million+. Well thanks to everyone for the suggestions and the replies, but I fail. Is there a program that will run and gun? I mean, take what it can to safety, then go back in for the more stubborn stuff after at SOMETHING has been saved? That's just ridiculous, especially since drives can decay rapidly. I read somewhere that people have waited MONTHS for spinrite to finish whatever the hell statistical algorithms it employs to retrieve all the ones and zeros. However, at this rate, everyone who cares about this data will be long dead before the data is recovered. The screens keep changing, and maybe something's actually getting accomplished. Spinrite's been stuck at exactly 37.83% for like 27 hours, doing god knows what. Sure enough, spinrite is stuck at 37.83%. Thinking there might be some actual surface errors instead, I ran spinrite. I ran format recovery and it got stuck at 40%. I was like, "Dude, I can probably do it for free." He claimed he has just restored using the restore disks, so I assumed it just needed a format recovery from OnTrack Easy Recovery.
A friend took his drive to Worst Buy for data recovery.
